What is Zone/Decentralize?

What is a Zone?

A Zone is a portion of your house that can be independently heated or cooled. Most houses can be divided into several Zones. The size of a single Zone can range from 100 square feet to 1,000 square feet. The exact size of a Zone will depend on your living habits.

Normally, a Zone is a specific area in your house that you want to heat or cool as a unit. One Zone might be your kitchen and family room, or a living room and dining room, or your master bedroom. Most homes have rooms that are not occupied or used on a regular basis. Obviously, you will save money by conditioning only those Zones that are being used.

How do I create a Zone?

The easiest way to create a zone is to install doors at each opening between the area inside the zone and the area outside the zone.

What is Decentralize?

Decentralize by replacing the traditional central heating and cooling system with two or more smaller, and energy-efficient systems. The independent decentralized systems are sized to fit the zone they are intended to heat or cool. Each system, called a Mini-Split, distributes the heated or cooled air to that zone, and only that zone.

You’re already familiar with traditional central heating and cooling systems that heat and cool your entire house at all times. Why is that necessary when you don’t occupy the entire house at all times?

What is a Mini-Split?

NRG SVRS may recommend ductless heat pumps, or decentralized split systems, for heating and cooling each zone of your home. We call them Mini-Splits: (1) “Mini” because they are small and sized for a zone, not an entire house; and (2) “Split” because they consist of two pieces: an indoor air handler, and an outdoor compressor. The split units are connected through a 2” opening in the wall that does not require ductwork.

The decentralized system offers great comfort and an attractive, highly-efficient point-of delivery system. By comparison, the traditional central system wastes energy dollars sending conditioned air through a 50 foot long, leaky, dirty, allergen infested obstacle course … a/k/a your air ducts.

Mini-Split systems are not new. They have been in use in Europe and Asia for decades and have proven to be economical and extremely efficient at both heating and cooling. [They are relatively new to North America just like Toyota and Honda were decades ago.]
